Water Pressure and Blockages
The water pressure, from a water company source, through the lines, is very high. Water loses its pressure between the main line and your home. It loses more pressure from the home to the faucet. The smaller the space, the lower the pressure because less water moves through it. The space can be too small because of the size of the pipe or debris build up.
If the pipe is too small, a professional can replace with a larger size. But, keep in mind, with a regular storage-tank type water heater, if you increase the volume of water flowing through your home, you water heater tank will empty faster, unless you have new water savers on your faucets. This can mean a great hot shower, but it won’t last as long.
Sometimes a blockage can be a developing problem. Some food-related items such as bacon grease or oil poured down the drain can solidify once inside the pipe. Many over-the-counter chemicals may work to break down and flush out mineral and food buildup. If this does not work, your local plumber can buy stronger chemicals or use a snake. Some chemicals are too potent to be sold over-the-counter to the public.
In some areas with big trees, the roots themselves can be the reason. There is a product called Root-X that can rid you of these nasty roots breaking through your lines, but should things be bad enough, the pipe line may need to be replaced anyway.
Your water itself can also be the culprit. Water leaves calcium, among other things deposited on your pipes. If this builds up over time, it causes a more narrow passage for the water to pass through, leaving you with less pressure. These mineral buildups are easily seen and are quite obvious when removing a piece of the pipe.
If the problem is with the water main itself, your water pressure will have a sudden drop. Contact the water company and they will investigate.
If you have well water, you may have very good water, but not the best amount of pressure. Problems can come from low well levers, increased water usage, home addition or a new irrigation system.
