Decorate Your Backyard Picnic with Picnic Hampers

Published by under Landscaping

When you are organizing a simple affair such as lunch with family or friends at home, you can always add a twist to it and make it more interesting for those involved. This is by turning it into a backyard picnic and working towards making it a memorable experience. In addition to this, you can also decorate it around a theme and what better way to do this than by using picnic hampers. To this, you need to employ a little creativity to the whole setting. While this is the case, there are a couple of things that you need to look into.

For starters, you should start by buying the hamper. There are several of these in the market and it is advisable to weigh your options before making any move to buy the same. This is largely because they have different features and as such, you should consider your needs and how you intend to use it. For instance, you can consider buying one that is integrated with an ideal lining. It should be properly covered with a cooler bag. This is important as it ensures that your packed food is at the right temperatures through the entire time.

Another factor that you need to consider before making this investment is the number of people who will be joining you. In this case, make sure that it can handle enough food and other necessities such as glasses, plates, napkins and utensils among others. Also, consider the type of material used in manufacture of the model you buy. It should be simple and made from high quality materials. This is important since it ensures that it will service you for a longer duration. More importantly, look at the hampers shoulder strap to ensure that it is easy to carry around and more so, if you will be having this family get together further from your home.

The interior is another important feature that you ought to consider. In this case, make sure that it is designed intricately and beautifully. If you are going to make an impression, this is an important factor that should not be left out when purchasing the same. Once you have selected the ideal choice for you, then it is time to consider a theme that is going to appeal to that simple lunch session. This should be based on the place you reside.

For instance, if you reside in the suburbs or city and your family members or friends are ultra modernized urbanites, you should choose a theme that moves away from the everyday lifestyle. In this regard, consider a traditional or vintage theme. Though these are beautifully designed and decorated before you purchase them, it is important to state that a more decoration will only add to its appeal. In addition to this, it will also make the day memorable not only to you but those invited as well. Remember, the first step comes with deciding to invest in a hamper that suits your needs.

When you are buying a picnic hamper, it is important to note that there are several themes to choose from when decorating the hampers and this will always add excitement to the setting.

Outdoor Kitchens and Winterization

Published by under Landscaping

Every portion of the country has challenges when it comes to wintertime. With some, it will be the snow and the ice. In other areas, it will be wind, rain, or even mild hail. Your outdoor kitchen may be in use for part of the winter, but that doesn’t mean that it does not need some special care.

Even if you live in an area that doesn’t see a lot of snow, you should plan ahead. Making sure that your outdoor kitchen has some cover and some extra care will be good for keeping it in good condition.

Outdoor kitchens are built to take the elemental changes. The refrigerators in particular are made to be impervious to the cold. They don’t need in most cases to be brought inside during the winter, even in higher elevations or colder climates. They do need to be switched off before the weather hits freezing.

Even if you use it during the wintertime, it’s a great time to clean it thoroughly and to get it in good shape. If you’re in the higher desert elevations, or in a snow prone area, then it will require a little more.

Empty your cabinets and clean the inside of the refrigerated unit.

Switch the power off to the units. If possible, unplug them. If you can’t unplug, switch your circuit breaker off.

Clean the entire outside of each unit, stove, refrigerator and grill.

If you have a sink attached to your outdoor kitchen and you’re in a cold area or a very high elevation, you may be prone to freezing. Take some special care for your sink unit in these areas.

Close off the supply of water to your sink and open the taps completely. Blow out the lines using air or even carbon dioxide. This will assure there is no water in your lines to freeze.

Use a cover to keep any dust, grit or debris from blowing into your sink and clogging the drainage area.

Clean the outside of all of your units. Wash them with a very mild degreasing agent. Particularly if they are stainless, but for all outdoor kitchens, you’re going to want to wash them with a mild soap, and nothing more. Never use any type of cleanser that has a gritty base to it.

For your grill, the cooking areas should be seasoned before you cover it. Using a soft clean cloth, and vegetable, wipe all of the areas that are cooking surfaces with vegetable oil and place them back onto your grill.

If you’re not going to be using your grill during the wintertime, shut off the gas. Remove the tank and store it in an area that is not prone to freezing. Cover the grill and all parts of the outdoor kitchen with tarp or covers.

Even if your kitchen is use all winter, it’s a great idea to clean and re-season it during the fall to keep it in the best shape. The myth about not covering your grills and outdoor kitchen elements in the wintertime is just that, a myth. The high desert in particular sees a great deal more wind and sand blowing in the winter. Protect your outdoor kitchen by covering it in the winter.

Make Your Outdoor View Stand Out

Published by under Landscaping

Just like our home’s interior, we also want to give beauty to our house yard. We do things- lots or few- just to make our eyes make an appreciation for it. But, some of us, no matter how hard we try in planning and designing, still our outdoor looks no better and worse, we make it less attractive. What must be the problem? Some of us have thought of hiring a professional landscape designer to solve this burden that easy. Having a professional to do the landscaping of our yard is a more sure choice for beautifying our homes however, it entails greater cost. If you want to opt for a do-it-yourself landscaping, I advice you to read through.

By improving your house’s outside view yourself, you save a significant amount of money and you gain the experience worth a head up. Like any other aim or purpose, a number of steps must be followed. These steps may be complicated, but if we’re interested, all of them will be undertaken with success. Why not we give this a try rather than leaving our lawns as is.

If you hire a professional, he sure will make use his knowledge of these five basic elements of landscaping. And, they are just helpful for you to know them because you will be designing for your own home. You sure will want it to be pretty in site. These elements are color, form, line, scale, and texture.

  • Color- Part of designing is choosing and matching colors together to portray an eye-friendly view. Colors affect people’s moods and feelings at the a certain moment they’re exposed to them by looking. Colors blue and green are cool colors. Both represents calm, peace, and they soothes stress away. Some people go to their gardens if they want to rest their minds from stress and problems. Some stay a longer time under a big tree to relax. It is just amazing how garden changes a negative mood to a pleasant one. This is one excellent character that gardens have. Leaves are almost all green or yellowish green and some flowers and fruits are blue. Colors that are bright like yellow, orange, and pink are beautiful for flowers. They give happiness and enriches imagination. On your choice, choose and match colors for your garden. Be guided of its pattern. You may want uniform colors or alternate them.
  • Form- Part of what make a garden attractive is how the plants are formed. Forms include but are not limited to upright, oval, columnar, spreading, broadly spreading, and arching. Yards with high fences can be designed of oval and upright.
  • Texture- The roughness or the smoothness of your plants define texture. It is equally important to take note of this element in your landscape decorating. Plants with thorny or rough leaves may be grouped together in one area. Or, you may place them directly planted in the soil rather than placing them in pots. It’s all your choice.

Outdoor decorating isn’t at all a tough task. It is only important to remember that you have to make a plan or a layout first before doing anything to start. This gives you a direction where to start and where to end. Follow the design layout and you can make changes, if possible, later.

Benefits of Western Red Cedar for Wood Fencing

Published by under Landscaping

Western Red cedar is a popular tree with many material uses, especially in the Northwest. Wood from the tree Native Americans once called –the tree of life — has had many uses over the centuries, most recently as a highly popular fencing material. So what is it that makes this wood such a coveted choice for cedar fences?

Western Red Cedar Facts

Thuja Plicata, commonly known as Western Red cedar, is an evergreen tree that is native to western North America. It ranges up to 65-70 meters tall and 3-4 meters thick in trunk diameter, and it can live extremely long — the oldest in the region is 1,460 years old.

Native Americans used this unique wood for canoes and other structures they designated as holy. Even the Ancient Egyptians once used cedar oil as part of the process when mummifying their great leaders. This rich history has led to Western Red cedar being the wood of choice for many centuries, with no sign of stopping even today in our world of advanced technology.

Natural Insulator

Western Red cedar offers insulation for your yard, blocking the cold winter winds. This is because of the cedar fence’s natural ability to insulate with air pockets deep within its cellular structure. Furthermore, a cedar fence is great for holding in your yard’s temperature so as to keep it a bit warmer than usual in the winter.

In addition to being a great wind blocker, cedar is also great for blocking sound. In fact, a cedar fence has 70 percent of the noise reduction qualities of a solid concrete wall. This makes a great fence for those who like to throw loud parties!

Natural Insect Repellent

The natural cedar oil produced by your wood fence is a great deterrent to annoying bugs such as termites, moths and mosquitoes. In effect, your cedar fence acts like a moat, protecting your yard from many different insect nuisances.

Surprisingly Durable

Western Red cedar is one of the most durable woods known to man. This is a result of its natural thujaplicins, which help ward off decay-inducing fungi. It is for this reason that fencing material made from this cedar has an exceptionally long life span, if properly cared for.

Resistant to Warping

Similar to the way our body maintains equilibrium with the outside environment, the hydroscopic qualities of Western Red cedar take in water and release it in a regulatory way. This makes the wood water friendly, protecting your fence from the harmful effects of exposure to water, such as warping and rotting.

Stable and Flexible

Western Red cedar also has the qualities of being both flexible and strong at the same time. For instance, it is a fourth the weight of redwood but has more than half the strength of oak. This gives it remarkable stability when holding even the most awkward of positions.

Easy to Stain

Western Red cedar lacks resin, which helps it easily bond with adhesives. This makes it easy to stain, as it will not reject the materials used. What’s more, the grain of the cedar also makes it easy to nail and saw.

With all of its great qualities, Western Red cedar is second to no other wood. Its all-around natural strengths make it the wood of choice in the Northwest.

The Great Garden Gnome Debate

Published by under Landscaping

Nothing gets a lot of people into a heated debate more than the subject of garden gnomes. Are they tacky or lovely lawn ornaments? Is owning a yard gnome a show of good taste or a form of slavery? Is gnome (aka knome) ownership a matter of pride or of shame?

The debate all started with Phillip Griebel, the ceramics maker who first created these little creatures with pointed hats on the head and fishing rod in hand. He based his idea on a local folklore which says gnomes work at the gardens at night while these garden owners slept peacefully in their beds. Soon, these lawn ceramics found their way into the gardens of Europe. They were brought to the United Kingdom by Sir Charles Isham after his visit from Germany.

Nowadays, you can find yard gnomes in various forms – from the most innocent of pastimes to the most naughty of moonings – and made from materials varying from plastic to terracotta. They are considered so tacky that they are permanently banned from the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show, a fact that is looked upon by many middle class English gardeners as pure and utter snobbery.

Garden gnomes are also considered the target of pranks and “kidnappings.” A well-known garden gnome prank is called the traveling gnome, where a garden gnome is stolen from its owners’ garden and taken on a cruise or to trips to various destinations. The hapless owners will be sent pictures of their beloved gnomes with famous landmarks on the background. Most of the time, they are mostly relocated to the forests where they can be “free.” The Italian-based Garden Gnome Liberation Front is notorious for this.

The hapless owner is, however, not entirely hapless. There are websites dedicated to letting these owners post information about their lost gnomes. The “kidnappers” can choose to leave ransom letters as well to make their demands for the return of the beloved little figurine.

So, which side of the fence are you on – gnome hater or gnome lover? It does not matter, you know? Whatever you do, garden gnomes are here to stay, and they will stay forever.

Installing the Perfect Koi Pond

Published by under Landscaping

Some front yard landscaping consists of flowerbeds, trees, fountains and other pretty decorations. Another landscaping touch will be to add a koi pond. You can set up the perfect koi pond yourself without having to pay a professional. Koi ponds are different from the water gardens because not a lot of plant life can be grown with the koi. There are some plants that koi do eat. Koi have a tendency to get quite large so it is best to build your pond a little larger. When it comes to pond size, the bigger you make it the better. When considering pond size, you will also have to take into consideration the amount of koi you will be putting in it.

When you have planned the perfect environment for your koi, it will be time to go pick the koi out. You do not want to buy too many of them since they do get rather large. Koi breed almost yearly so if you overpopulate them, this will cause some issues later. When bringing in new koi you will need to quarantine them for viruses or illnesses like the koi herpes virus which shows little to no symptom. Quarantining the new koi will cut down your chances of exposing your fish population to a potentially deadly situation. Run weekly water tests so you will notice anything wrong in the test results way before your pond starts showing stress symptoms.

Feeding your koi can be very exciting. The amount to feed them as well as what types of food they need can be advised by your local pet store. Their feeding patterns change with the seasons and temperatures. You can feed your koi fruit, bread, veggies and treats from the store. These fish can actually be trained to eat right from your hand. This training does take time and some patience but in the end it provides great entertainment to all.

Gutter Cleaning – The Importance of Gutter Cleaning in 4-Season States

Published by under Landscaping

Keeping your gutters clean and in proper repair is one of the least expensive and most important ways to maintain your home’s value. If your gutters are blocked or improperly installed, water will drain onto your house, causing rot damage to wood surfaces. While the fall is the time of year most associated with overflowing gutters, the other seasons pose their own problems. In states that have 4 distinct seasons, it is important to keep gutters clean and repaired throughout the year.

Four season states require gutters to be clean year-round

If you live in California or Oregon and other states without harsh winters or icing, you can often clean your gutters just once per year. Other states that have winters with lots of snow and ice, require more care. Gutters can become damaged from freezing water, falling ice, or the weight of collecting snow. Long winter mean their is plenty of time for damage to occur. If your gutters are not kept clean in advance of the winter, you are at risk of expensive damage.

Likewise, the spring brings heavy rains, which may worsen conditions that developed over the winter. April, May and June are rainy months and your gutters will be working hard. In some states, summer brings additional rains, but as the weather is not as harsh many people make repairs, install new gutters and accessories such as gutter guards, in anticipation of the fall. In four season states, the fall months are time that your gutter investment most pays off. Falling leaves, branches, pine cones, etc, with quickly fill even the most clean gutters. If you’ve done your proper maintenance, the rain will wash the debris down the spout and away from your house. If you haven’t kept your gutters as clean as you should have, here’s where you will pay the piper. With only yourself to blame.

Clean gutters protect home value

Simple scheduled tasks, like keeping your gutters properly cleaned and maintained is an important 1st step in keeping your home well-maintained.

Some Hammocks Are More Comfortable Than Others

Published by under Landscaping

Here’s an important thing to know about hammocks: they are not all created equal. The classic image of a relaxing summer day spent with cool lemonade in hand, gently swaying all your cares away on your hammock, quickly goes away if you aren’t in the right one. I know everyone thinks that a classic rope hammock is the way to go, but I have discovered that there’s a better way.

In 1999 I spent my summer traveling on the Oregon coast for six weeks. I had my family with me, and we just stayed at State campgrounds in a little pop-up trailer. One afternoon we pulled into a camp and set up our ordinary arrangements. We got all the food bins organized, placed the lawn chairs around the fire pit, and hung one of our hammocks up between a couple of trees. My youngest son was one at the time and he and I got on the hammock together. We rocked and swayed and generally enjoyed ourselves watching as the other kids fed a happy little squirrel some bread bits. Then, suddenly, we learned a funny thing about rope hammocks, that don’t hold up very well. Boom! In an instant, my son and I found ourselves slammed down to the ground as the rope gave way.

Obviously, not all rope hammocks are the same. The one I was using that day in Oregon was not as hefty and strong as others. Had I been using a thicker rope hammock, I would have saved myself a bruised behind. But, I wouldn’t have given my wife the comic relief she enjoyed that day either.

As for comfort, there is a big difference between rope, woven, and fabric hammocks. When you try to settle into a rope one your skin pushes through all the little openings, and it just isn’t really that comfy. A nice woven surface, on the other hand provides much more support and allows the weight of your body to be more evenly distributed. The material used to make some of these woven hammocks tend to be a little rough so just be sure to think how it will feel on days when you are in shorts and T’s.

By far, the hammocks I most prefer are the quilted, woven ones. These come in a wide variety of color options, are plenty wide (usually big enough for two adults), and won’t break the bank. You can truly relax on these types because your skin isn’t constantly being made uncomfortable from going through any gaps. The fabrics used on most of these generally holds up well to the weather and can be left out on the stand, or wherever you have it set up. One note of caution on these though, is that if you have a puppy around, it will find the hammock and rip it to shreds if given the chance. It’s another story for another time, but I had the misfortune of experiencing that when my retriever pup discovered just how fun it can be to thrash the thing to hundreds of bits.

Hammocks serve a variety of purposes, from casual relaxation and entertainment, to camping. Some are suited for throwing into a back pack, while others are intended to be set up in the yard. All things considered, if it is comfort you want, I would recommend a woven or fabric hammock over a rope one.
