Accessorize a Room in 5 Simple Steps

Do you find that the current look of your home is boring? Are you just looking for something different? There are plenty of simple ways to accessorize any room in your home. You don’t need a lot of money or an interior decorator to give a room an entirely new look. Try these simple ways to accessorize any room in your home.

Add Some Extra Flair with Throw Pillows
Start by adding some complementary throw pillows to a sofa or chair. Or try adding a throw blanket to the back of the sofa. Be sure, however, that these items are not the same exact color as the sofa or chair. After all, they should work to add some interest and design element to the room. For instance, if you have a tan sofa, find decorative pillows where tan is not the main color in the design or pattern. By finding accessories that match other complementary colors in the room, you can really pull the room together.

Update Your Lighting Fixtures
Give your room a whole new glow by updating your lighting fixtures. Installing new lighting in a room can make a big difference, whether you’re replacing older fixtures or small ones. There are many inexpensive ones available that are easy to install. Find a design style to fit the room, but also make sure the light fixture gives off plenty of light to make your room brighter and more welcoming.

Go Green with Your Living Room Accessories
You can easily add more color to the room with a houseplant or vase of flowers. No matter your style, you should be able to find some really beautiful fake flower arrangements at your local craft store. Otherwise, if you’re creative enough, you can make one yourself. The flower arrangement should be placed in a prominent spot in the room so that it garners more attention. If you decide on a houseplant, real or fake, it should also go where it will garner more attention. To draw more attention to the fireplace, for instance, consider placing two houseplants on either side of it.

Fill Up a Blank Wall with Framed Pictures
Are your walls boring? Try hanging a few picture frames in various shapes and sizes to spice things up. You should be able to choose from a wide array of unique and stylish frames that will not only help you display your pictures but will also add some interest to the room. Black-and-white pictures or those with just a touch of color will provide a dramatic look, as will matted images.

Reorganize Knickknacks with Shelving
If your various knickknacks in a room are getting lost in the mix, consider grouping them together on a mantle or shelving on oak bookcases. This way, you can display them together in a stylish arrangement and thus better accessorize the room.

It’s simple to redecorate or switch around the style design of a room by accessorizing. If you really want to do something totally different, you might look into moving the furniture around. You could also add new pieces of furniture to the mix, such as new such as a new side table or oak coffee table. Adding accessories to a room should be neither hard nor expensive. Just get creative and allow you style to really show.

Buying The Best Filing Cabinets

f you are in the market for oak file cabinets, you should know that wood file cabinets that are of low quality are generally meant for you to assemble them yourself. This can be quite a difficult task, not least because it requires assembly hardware. Particleboard filing cabinets, too, should be stayed away from. The label may say that it’s made of wood, too, but don’t be fooled by that; even if it does say “wood,” it may still be particleboard.

The Furniture Manufacturers Association states that solid wood does include particleboard, but what you really want is solid, true wood, something such as pine or oak. Filing cabinets, like oak desks, are usually going to have to hold a lot of weight (after all, paper can be heavy), so make sure it comes with little clamps and screws, not particleboard cam locks. Next, you’re going to have to know the difference between grain, solid wood without particleboard, and wood veneer. You can tell whether a piece is made of solid wood by looking at how the grain runs. If the end grain runs the opposite direction it should (such as perpendicular to the other grain), you’ve most likely gotten a veneer piece.

Veneer certainly has its place and you can probably use it, but the most important thing is that you shouldn’t purchase veneer when you’re expecting real wood. So, know what you’re looking for and what you’re looking at. With wood drawers, these are well made with English dovetailed joints, and are built most sturdily this way. A drawer assembled with just cams isn’t going to hold together for very long. If a drawer has been glued and stapled, it can be acceptable, but only if the staples are holding the assembly together only until the glue dries. Next, look at the hardware that’s used to open the drawer. What does the runner system look like? Does it pull out evenly and smoothly? What does the tracking system look like and how does it work? If the drawer pulls out a lesser amount than 90%, storage space is going to be lost and it will be difficult to get your documents out of the back of the file.

File cabinets should not have Euro type roller glides under any circumstances. With this system, two interlocking wheels work on a spindle, and can’t support a file drawer’s heavy weight. They’ll likely break down very quickly and not work for very long at all. A better glide system for filing cabinets is a full ball bearing, full extension slide system that has at least a 100-pound weight rating. Finally, are you going to want to lock your drawers? You can lock each individual drawer, which is the easiest way to lock up what you don’t want others to be able to see easily. Or, you can lock up all the drawers at once with a keyhole that just works on the top, blocking all drawers below, too.

Be careful, though, because interlocking systems even on quality wood files can sometimes “hang up” and cause access problems, and they can also be expensive. As a wise consumer, you’re going to want to take everything into consideration when you choose a file cabinet. Stay with filing cabinets that are made of solid wood and that have good glides, and don’t buy a filing cabinet that has to be assembled. If you follow these few simple rules, you should have easy access to your files and your cabinet will be long lasting.

Tips On Warming Up Your Bath

Nothing is more luxurious in winter than a warm bathroom. Happily, almost anyone can achieve this luxury without sacrificing period style or overrunning your budget. So many of the more desirable options are completely affordable. For instance, plug-in electric towel warms are under $150, and overhead rain shower fixtures begin at only $60. A good pressure-balanced mixer can be had for as little as $200. However, if you have money to spend, you can find luxuries such as jetted pedestal tubs and steam shower systems that will set you back a few thousand dollars.

If you’re in the market for a towel warmer or radiator, they come in two basic styles: the traditional round tube shape and the flat-panel “Euro” style. If your bathroom is cramped, one option is a tubular towel-warming basket, which can be mounted to keep your towels hot and within easy reach.

Every towel warmer generates heat. But surprisingly, many of the hard-wired versions are powerful enough to be considered radiators. Even the inexpensive electric models that put out 100 watts or so are a wonderful addition to your bathroom. Not only do they dry the towels, but they also reduce dampness and mildew in the room. The more powerful hard-wired electric or hydronic towel radiators will easily heat a larger space if they’re sized and placed properly. If you’re worried about safety, neither version gets too hot to touch. Electric towel warmers only reach 140 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas hydronics range between 120 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on how hot you keep the system. These radiators provide your very own zoned heating.

Visit your local dealer to help find the perfect unit for your space. You need to consider variables such as the amount of tile or stone, the type and location of existing heat sources (steam radiators or forced air), and the number of windows. For those of you will really tiny bathrooms that won’t even fit a small towel warmer, you can probably find room along the baseboard to put a couple of horizontal radiator panels.

When it ultimately comes down to it, it’s the water in the bath or shower that’s most important. Especially if you are upgrading the shower anyway, be sure to install a pressure-balanced or thermostatic mixing valve. If you’re looking for something inexpensive and simple, consider a pressure-balance valve, which keeps the water pressure in the shower constant, preventing sudden fluctuations in water temperature, as often occurs when the toilet is flushed, for instance.

If you want your water a more precise temperature, than a thermostatic valve is a good choice. This valve actually mixes hot and cold water together, bringing it within one degree of the setting. These valves regulate fluctuations in the incoming water pressure as well. *These truly luxurious valves go for at least $1,000, although you can certainly spend more. Whatever your décor, many of these mixers are available in suites that include period-inspired shower heads and cross-handled knobs or levers. Higher-end valves even come with memory settings, allowing each family member to choose and record a preferred shower temperature.

If you can’t get enough humidity in winter and you love your shower, a steam shower is another great option. You’ll probably need a major retrofit to install one. The generator needs its own space, and usually modifications need to be made to accommodate the steam shower doors. But on the plus side, a twenty-minute steams uses very little water: only about two gallons. But be prepared. A basic system (including generator, steam head, and temperature controls) starts at about $3,000. If you’re going to add an extras such as stereo speakers, light or aromatherapy packages, expect that price to be higher.

Are you one of those people who prefer an old-fashioned tub for your bath? Prices for reproduction roll-top designs with claw feet start at about $1,000 for either cast iron or the more environmentally friendly acrylic. These deep tubs are the ultimate soaking paradise. They also come in double-ended styles to accommodate two (or multiple children). You can specify claw feet in the style and finish of your choice, so your new tub will complement any décor. If you’re looking at high-end options, you can find custom-made tubs in copper, steel, marble, and even teak.

If you’d prefer a traditional tub that also accommodates a water- or air-jet system, your best option is a pedestal or Roman tub. Strategically placed jets will turn any bathtub into a home spa. And don’t worry, the skirt will conceal the tubes and motor. A fully equipped air-jet tub isn’t cheap. Expect to pay upward of $4,000.

Bedroom Redecorating on a Budget

You really can change the look of your bedroom without spending a fortune. A little creative thinking and planning can make a difference whether your working on a full project or just making a couple of changes.

Here’s how to get started:

Buy a few accessory pillows for $10 each (or less) in a new color palette. Take pillows of similar color, mix up the textures –like silk and chenille – and you’ve instantly go yourself a sophisticated monochromatic look. Try a romantic look with layers of pillows — large ones in the back and smaller ones up front.

A fresh coat of paint can make a huge difference in the look of room and its fairly inexpensive to do. Think repainting the entire room is too big of project? Then break it down by focusing and painting only one wall and experimenting with a single area of the room. Want to create some texture with your older more detailed closet doors? Then paint the closet’s frame in a neutral color and the inset in a dark one. Giving a room a new life can be as simple as painting the furniture. Give an old dresser a faux antique finish or sponge paint a cabinet.

A new headboard can be rather expensive. Try something new and creative like getting an inexpensive wrought iron or picket fence at a flea market. Bed skirts make most beds look soft and sophisticated and are an inexpensive decorating investment. They’re available in several color, textures and patterns. By using a soft and neutral color you can get the most in both beauty and versatility. You do not want it to be the center of attention, but you do want it to accent your bed.

Window treatments are easier than people think. Want to try something inexpensive and not too dramatic? Try swag curtains. It will really add a feminine touch to the room. You can place bicycle or plants in the ceiling. Or opt for just a blind and an inexpensive garland or floral accent at the top of the window. We also love the look of a simple rod with funky finials and ready-made unlined drapes. Ikea, Kmart, Target, JCPenney and Pottery Barn carry a large selection of all of these items.

Do have a canopy or four-poster bed that could use a little sprucing up? Drape fabric over the poles and let a little of the fabric fall to floor to achieve that beautiful *puddle* effect. To get this effect all you need to do is add an extra 2 feet to the fabric before it’s cut. Candles are a decorative item that many people forget to use. While most people go with white candles, since they’re the most sophisticated, consider clustering colored candles to create a focal point on a night stand or dresser. Even numbers tend to be boring so go for odd numbered candle groupings. Try different heights and gather them as an altar on a shelf.

Hanging framed artwork and posters or mirrors is inexpensive and can go a long way in changing the look of room, but make sure it doesn’t clash with your current décor. Keep it simple with a neutral colored frame – black, gold, brown or white. For an easy decorating idea try simple wall shelves. Collections are perfect for displaying on a wall shelf, but try to stay away from small items. Loading shelves with a lot of tiny knick-knacks will make your shelf appear too busy. Try glass bottles for a minimal look (adorn with fresh flowers), or even use a shelf to prop up framed paintings or photos.

Buying the Right Bookcase

Almost everybody needs to have bookcases in their home, especially if there are students in the house that use books to study with.  It is also helpful to have a bookcase to ensure that your valuable books are safe and your home stays tidy. Traditionally solid oak bookcases are kept in a lounge, a study, or a bedroom.  A bookcase is perfect in any area that is used to unwind, relax, or study.  Almost any room is perfect for a bookcase.

There are many kinds of bookcases to choose from, from modern to stylish, from cheap to traditional, each type has a purpose.  Bookcases are no longer just used to hold books.  You can choose styles that are designed to hold CDs or DVD’s perfectly.  These usually have a rack going up the middle and wider shelves on each side.

It is important to choose a bookcase that will be practical for the rule.  If you own lots of books than you should consider buying a floor to ceiling model.  If you own just a few books you can choose one that is smaller so things can be displayed on top of it.  This is a good option if you have a small room.  The bookshelf can be used to hold a stereo, TV, or decorative ornaments.  If the bookcases are placed in a dining room or lounge it’s a good idea to choose a semi bookcase or bureau style that has shelves on the top half and cupboards on the bottom.  This option provides you with extra storage for your possessions.

Be sure to choose a color that will complement the rest of your furnishings.  The best choice would be solid wood or a faux wood finish since it looks more traditional.  You can find some nice ones with a simulated wood finish that are affordable and realistic looking.  If possible, invest in real wood, since it will last for years.

There are some very stylish models that include metal and glass constructions in unusual shapes like a wave.  This kind will lead to a sleek element to any room while curved shapes add styled to your room.  The other options include colorful plastic cues that are stackable in a variety of ways.  These can be filled with ornaments or books, depending on what you like.

You must think about the size, color, and space as the main components of your bookcase.  Be sure to take accurate measurements of the room prior to shopping for furniture.  This makes it easier to choose a bookcase that will definitely fit.

If you don’t take the time to choose a bookcase that complements the rest of your furnishings, it will look out of place.  If possible purchase matching oak file cabinet or a desk to really finish the look of a home office.  You will know what is best for your home; just keep the three components in mind.

Amish Oak Furniture – Only the Finest Materials Used

Published by under Furniture

AmishBuggy

Amish oak furniture offers several construction benefits that cannot be matched by contemporary mass-production techniques of today. The Amish use natural, high quality oak to create heirloom quality furniture. Today’s mass-produced furniture is constructed with particleboard and other harmful materials, making it disposable after a short time of use.

Amish furniture is built to be of heirloom quality. Their traditional handcrafted methods of construction ensure that all of their items are durable and feature great attention to detail. Their building techniques do not require the use of electricity because of the Amish way of life. Their tools are powered hydraulically and pneumatically. Amish furniture is constructed from hand-selected pieces of lumber so that only the most beautiful and durable parts of the tree are used in their furniture. The Amish use high quality oak, cherry, and maple lumber. Their detailing and staining is also done by hand. Today’s mass-produced furniture is built from particleboard and even formaldehyde that often results in furniture that is easily nicked, unsteady and sometimes dangerous.

While most furniture is currently built in energy-consuming manufacturing plants that are harmful to the environment, Amish furniture builders use eco-friendly methods for construction that reduce energy consumption, reduces deforestation, and does not produce toxic off-gases typical of mass-produced furniture. Relying only on man-power, Amish craftsmen only use lumber from sustainable harvested forests. Amish furniture is never made from toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, flame-retardants, composite woods, or adhesive and synthetic bonding materials that will off-gas (release substances) into the air in your home. Amish oak furniture is also durable enough to outlast your personal use. Instead of ending up as garbage in a landfill, Amish furniture can remain a cherished item by passing it down or selling it to family or friends in your community.

Mass-produced furniture is often made to represent the ever-changing trendy styles that quickly become passé, but Amish furniture is always created in timeless styles that will always be cherished. Their timeless looks include Mission style that features clean, even lines and exposed joinery and their Shaker style is characterized by simplicity, innovative joinery and functionality. Using nature as their main inspiration, the Amish also incorporate geometric patterns such s circles and triangles into their design. Their furniture is suitable for all rooms in the home. They create bedroom sets, oak dining sets and living room furniture that include occasional tables and TV stands. These items can often be custom-built to perfect suit your home. Whether it’s a fully customized solid wood entertainment center to a simple yet elegant oak dining room chair Amish craftsmen can produce items of superb quality.

The Amish reside in various states of America with the largest groups residing in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Their unique lives are shaped by strict rules and regulations that prevent them from taking advantage of many modern conveniences that many people take for granted such as electricity, cars, and telephones. Their lifestyles allow their creativity and hard work to flourish and thus create stunning furniture.

Amish furniture is impossible to replicate through modern mass-production techniques. The patience and attention given to each individual piece leads to special items that will last a lifetime.
