Learn How to Add Color to Your Kitchen

If you’re like most families, you probably spend quite a bit of time in the kitchen. So why not make it more interesting by adding some color to the room? Maybe you don’t want a drab and dreary kitchen, but you don’t know quite how to add the right touch. Try some of these simple ways to add color to your kitchen, and make your look go from boring to beautiful.

Add Color by Dressing Up Your Table
If you’re looking for an easy way to add color to your kitchen, try dressing up your kitchen table. You might add a colorful tablecloth or placemats, as well as some colorful dishware. Add flowers in a vase or basket to the center of your wood dining table to add some instant color to the room. You want to try to find colors that complement your kitchen décor but add interest at the same time.

Add Color with a Backsplash
You don’t have to have a boring kitchen backsplash. Although you can always keep it simple with a neutral-colored tile or laminate, why not choose a colorful backsplash instead? You should be able to find tile and laminates for your backsplash in a variety of different colors. If you want a totally unique look, try arranging colored glass that’s been broken up in a random pattern on the wall. In this way, you can work some color into the décor and end up with a personalized, one-of-a-kind backsplash.

Paint an Accent Wall a Different Color
If your kitchen is painted a neutral color, then paint an accent wall to incorporate some color into the décor. You’ll want to choose a wall that’s not completely covered with cabinets or appliances. You’ll want the accent color to work well with the décor of your kitchen. For a more subtle look, go with a matching color. But if you want the wall to really stand out, pick a color that’s complementary.

Take the Doors Off the Cabinets
When you take the doors off your kitchen cabinets, you can display all your colorful dishes and other tableware. If you have neutral dishes, add some pop by painting the insides of the cabinets a contrasting color. This doesn’t mean you need to take every cabinet door off. But choose a couple of prominent cabinets about the countertops to be your “color cabinets.”

Use Window Treatments to Add Interest
Another great option is to utilize the window area in your kitchen to add color. For your valance or drapes, choose a color that will really stand out in the décor. A black-and-white kitchen, for instance, would benefit greatly from some red or purple window treatments.

You don’t need to redecorate the entire room in order to add color to your kitchen. Use what you already have and build some color into it, adding your own touches here and there around the room.

Backyard Shed Plans – Build a Backyard Shed

Published by Medesto Remodeler under DIY

Many of the houses built these days always have good parking space, plenty of compound and the most definite thing that seems not to lack these days is a backyard.

It is quite evident that by the move of technology that even houses are being built with new and great ideas. Nothing tends to be the same old same old; they are changing by the day.

The one thing that people do not know what to do is with the space that comes as the backyard. That is why even backyard shed plans have been structured in order to help people in building and in the beautification of their yards.

Most of the backyard shed plans are available via the internet and are there at very affordable prices. But before one gets to purchase on it is best to consider some few questions that will lead them to choose the best.

The first thing is to know the amount of space they have in their backyard that they are planning to build on. It may be that they only want to build a certain sector and not just the whole yard.

This is because there are backyard shed plans that are designed for large yards and others are designed for small ones.

After this is to consider how much one is willing to spend in the backyard plan.

You would find that the backyard shed plans are all drawn in different forms and the more complicated it gets the more on will spend on building it. It may also tend to be simple but the materials that are required to build it are quite expensive.

The last thing is to know how you want your shed to look like at the end of the day. Should it be simple or sophisticated?

When it comes to backyards people tend to pay less attention because they tend to be at the back of the house there fore no one gets to see them.

But the one thing to know is that it is your house and your neighbors can tell what kind of a person or family you are.

You would find that most people’s backyard and full of garage stuff and a lot of garbage and this does not paint a good picture. Things have been made easier as they are constructors that you can call in order to have your backyard done.

And they come as a package sometimes; the backyard shed plans and the person to do it. It may cost you but at the end it is all to your benefit.

If you are looking for more backyard shed plans, I highly recommend My Shed Plans elite guide by Ryan Henderson. Learn how to build your own shed at my site.

How to Build a Shed Roof That Will Last and Look Great

Published by Medesto Remodeler under DIY

When you build a shed roof you need to realize that it may be subjected to extremely heavy loads if you live in an area that gets any amount of snowfall. If not, you still need to think about heavy rain and winds regardless of where you live. Build a shed roof that will look great and protect your belongings for years.

When you purchase your shed plans, (and you really need to), you will have to ensure that the construction of the roof will conform to your local building codes. A good set of plans will give the sizes and types of materials you need to buy. Once you see exactly what it is you need you can then build the trusses yourself or go to your local supplier and they will build them according to your plans.

Once you have made the trusses or they are delivered from the fabricator, you need to mark the location for each on the top plate of the walls. Trusses are usually placed at 24 inches on center and you should have someone hold them in place for you while you nail them in place.

Most plans you find to build a shed roof will specify 5/8 inch sheathing to connect the trusses together and to support the expected roof loads. Just nail or screw the sheathing in place and cover with a good quality asphalt roofing paper and shingles. You need to be careful when you build a shed roof, the large pieces of sheathing can catch the wind and be blown right out of your hands or even worse; you could be knocked off the roof.

If you expect any amount of snow fall you should your roof pitch as steep as possible to allow the snow to slide off and not accumulate. Heavy snow can add thousands of pounds onto the roof load very quickly and stress even the sturdiest of structures to the breaking point. The last thing you want to wake up to after a snow storm is a collapsed shed roof due to snow load.

Build a shed roof that will be attractive by trying to match the color of the shingles on your house; in some places it is a requirement and in the building codes. You should also use high quality 20 year asphalt shingles so you roof will last. Also when you build a shed roof, it is one of the most important sections of your shed. It must be able to withstand everything that Mother Nature can throw at it. Heavy wind and rain and tons of snow, it must be water proof, outlast the rest of the shed and it must look good as well.

Have you been trying to find a simple solution to your storage needs? If you are looking for an easy way to build the shed you need, then look no farther. You will discover everything you need for your shed projects, from how to build a shed roof to building the foundation. Build Your Own Greenhouse

Published by Medesto Remodeler under DIY

If you love gardening, you definitely dream of constructing your own greenhouse nursery. Just imagine how exciting and pleasing it is to walk through your garden full of vegetables, herbs and flowering plants secured and protected from destructive elements such as animals and insects. If you have a green thumb and growing plants is your passion, there is nothing that can obstruct you to construct and build your own greenhouse.

First and foremost, constructing a greenhouse calls for a considerable room size of not less than ten by twenty meters. This is an acceptable size though you can always go for a larger space. You should note though that the smaller the size the easier and cheaper the maintenance will be. You can also purchase a do-it-yourself or DIY greenhouse kit but the possibilities on these things are quite restraining.

The following are the materials you’ll need:

  1. Poles made of wood for building frames and doors. Keep in mind that a firm end and center structure are significant for sturdy edifice that’s why you should ensure that the wood is properly treated.
  2. PVC piping for creating a rib cage curving structure from one side of the ground to another.
  3. Enough -6mm clear plastic to cover the entire greenhouse.
  4. Metal stakes, which will be utilized for hammering into the ground. This will also let the PVC’s solid base to slide into place properly
  5. Duct tape for joining different materials and pieces together.
  6. Nails, hammer and other basic construction tools and equipments.

You may need some other materials to build your own greenhouse, but these things compose the chief structure of it. The woods will be utilized to make the ends and doors of the greenhouse. Ensure that these materials are well propped up by pounding and hammering them deep into the ground. You can also have wooden poles to support the structure by positioning them at 45 degree angle from the frame of the greenhouse. At regular intervals between the frames, hammer the metal stakes into the soil while maintaining approximately two meter distance from one another. They should be arranged accurately at the left and right side of the greenhouse.

When the metal stakes are positioned, you can then fit the PVC piping to the stakes, allowing the PVC to embrace a solid structure at the bottom so it can hitch the roof up. The PVC piping should be bent until it makes a U shape over the apex where the greenhouse will be placed and then glide the other end into the stake at the other surface.

Once you’ve accomplished the above steps, you will have a strong and sturdy frame for your greenhouse. Next, place the plastic cover over the frame. You may need to cut the lengths of the cover to fit accurately to your frame. You can use the duct tape to keep the cover in place or you can also utilize plastic ties. It’s important for the cover to be attached to every piece of the structure to inhibit any movement. An efficient duct taping technique with the aid of huge heavy rocks can help keep the cover in its place.

See? You can build your own greenhouse almost effortlessly!

Installing Floor Tile

Published by Medesto Remodeler under DIY

If you are planning to replace a few tiles on the kitchen floor, you need not call the mason for doing it. It is a simple job and can be done by a few helping hands. I will give you some tips on how installing floor tile can be done quickly with a few helping hands.

There are five steps that have to be followed when installing floor tile. The first step is to prepare the base floor. The kitchen floor should be cleaned of all wax, grease, oil and grime with a good cleaner. It is always advisable to use a good quality, environmental friendly cleaner for the cleaning purpose. If you have a wooden base floor, it should be made smooth by removing any uneven areas and any loose boards on the floor should be properly tightened.

The technique to installing floor tile is start laying the floor from the center of the room. The measure of the room should be done exactly and the any irregularities ignored. The center location on the floor has to be marked accurately using a chalk line. Lines should be drawn across the length and breadth of the room and the place where the lines intersect is the center. Recheck the accuracy of the center position as it is very important for quality floor tile installation.

The second step is to lay loose tile from the centre along the marked chalk lines. After laying the loose tiles, measure the distance of the last tile from the wall. This will give you an idea of the size of the last tile that needs to be placed to finish the row. Once you have an idea by placing the loose tiles you can have an idea of the number of tiles required to complete the entire room.

The third step is to place different color tiles at different locations as per your choice. Open the boxes and place the tiles at the accurate places on the floor. Now, start applying the adhesives on one fourth of the floor area and wait for sometime. It generally takes about 10-15 minutes for the adhesive to dry before you can start installing floor tiles. However, the time may depend on the temperature and humidity.

Start placing the tiles along lines starting from the center of the floor. Remember, placing the first tile correctly as it is very important and determine the finish. Place each tile firmly on the ground and also against another tile. This will ensure a quality finish. The border tile should be cut accurately to give a perfect finishing to the room. When fitting a tile along a pipe or any other obstruction, simply cut the tile into that shape so that it fits exactly into that position. Do not wash the tiles at least one week after installing floor tile.

DIY Sunroom Building Explained

Published by Medesto Remodeler under DIY

Sunroom prices vary greatly based on two things – the materials that you choose and how much it costs you in labor. When these expenses are combined the cost of your sunroom may seem quite exorbitant, but you will find that this cost is outweighed by the amount of satisfaction that you will get from the room. It also increases the value of your home, because you are adding square footage that many people look for and enjoy. Constructing a sunroom will cost much less than adding an addition to your home. It also takes much less time than building a traditional room onto the home as well.

One thing that you will want to be careful about is the materials, size, and features that you choose for your sunroom. If you do not plan, then you will find that the cost is much more than you expected. Planning and preparing by choosing the right style, design, and materials can help to increase your satisfaction level when you meet your budget. Make a budget for materials and labor and stick with it.

Estimates are not fixed, but there is normally an average price based on the size and style of the sunroom. Materials, size, drainage needs, location, ventilation needs, style, and more dictate the prices, so that is why it is important to include all of these components in your budgeting.

Building Your Sunroom

If you want to build a sunroom, but the labor costs are throwing you over budget, then you can consider building your sunroom yourself. The new building price can be dramatically decreased by using one of the many do-it-yourself sunroom kits. You will have complete control over the materials and design of your sunroom. These kits come in a variety of styles for you to choose from and then you add the features that you need and that fit you budget.

Where you live can have a big impact upon your sunroom as well. If you live in an area of weather extremes, then you will need to spend more money to help decrease the effect of temperature changes on your sunroom. You may also need to have a heating and cooling system installed and this can increase the price as well. Furnishings and accessories are also another expense, so you want to make sure that you choose all of the features and items wisely to help you stay on budget and increase your satisfaction level.

Your DIY Solar Pool Heater For Clean Fun

Published by Medesto Remodeler under DIY

A solar pool heater means more enjoyment, more fun out of your swimming pool. After all, why do you have one? It’s an expensive asset on which you also spend valuable time and money, maintaining it.

There are four ways to heat your pool

  • electric heater
  • gas, usually a propane heater
  • using a pool cover
  • solar pool heating

You would know already that heating a swimming pool electrically or with gas is very expensive. Consequently many people make a choice – not to heat the pool at all at cooler times of the year or day.

But this means wasting your asset just because it is expensive to heat. Why have a pool and then not swim in it? Use solar power energy and make your pool or outdoor spa an hospitable environment to enjoy at any time. A solar pool heater – or spa heater – allows you to extend the use of your pool or outdoor spa into spring and autumn, cool evenings and mornings.

Further advantages of solar pool heating include:

  • You save on energy, gas or electricity, running a conventional pool heater
  • Solar energy is free!
  • You reduce greenhouse gas emissions

You can buy a solar pool heater, up to a cost of $2000. Or you can build one yourself. For much less.

Is a DIY solar pool heater not incredibly complex and expensive to put together? No, it only requires a good set of instructions and basic handyman’s skills to build one yourself.

And the cost? It can actually be done for as little as under US$100.

Yes, of course you do need a circulation pump and if that runs on mains power it will take a measly 15 to 20 Watts only for a 30,000 litre pool. But of course, using a solar powered pump will not even require this use of mains power.

There are solar pool heaters for different situations, and they come in any size. Rooftop systems lay flat on your roof and are best for the very large pools, or you may like to consider an on the ground system. The on the ground system is installed right next to your pool with a maximum exposure to the sun’s warmth.

It is the on the ground system that could be built for under US$100.

So, in selecting your solar pool heater system you need to know the size of your pool and your local weather conditions (you do need sunshine!).

Just remember that heated pool water is a good environment for bacterial and algae growth so must monitor correct chlorine or salt levels to the water. You should get expert advice about that from your local pool supplier.

Oh, and the pool cover. Yes, by all means use it as a passive solar top-up of your pool enjoyment.

Now enjoy your swim!

Dr Erik Leipoldt has long been concerned about the effects of global warming. In particular he uses his own experience of severe disability in practical approaches towards alternate energy sources to survive and thrive in our environmentally disabled world. Installing A Bar Countertop In Your Home

Published by Medesto Remodeler under DIY

Home renovation has become something of cultural phenomenon in today’s society. With more and more television shows and magazine features focusing on rejuvenating the decor and design in our homes, owners have followed suit, looking for new and affordable ways to maximize the value of their home through design changes. When it comes to getting the most bang for your buck when it comes to design and renovation, changing countertops leads the pack.

A countertop can set the visual tone for the room – and often at a very affordable price. Normally when we think of countertops we think of those surfaces that are found in the kitchen or bathroom. But there is another type of countertop that sets a visual and social tone for an entire room – the bar countertop.

An in-home bar space is the modern world’s answer to entertaining; a place over which to serve cocktails or coffee and gather with friends and family. A bar such as this sets a mood for a room – warm and earthy or cool and sophisticated; no matter what we choose our bar area to be chances are that it will set the tone for the much of the home. A bar countertop is the material that we use to dictate this tone.

There are essentially two options when it comes to building a bar countertop. Some people prefer to construct a whole new bar countertop starting from the ground up; while there are others who choose to build the countertop on top of an existing structure such as a cabinet, table, and the like.

This alternative option is typically much cheaper because you only need to buy the top layer, which can be found in a variety of materials and in a wide range of prices. Some of the more popular materials used to construct the bar countertop include Formica, ceramic tiles, Corian, wood, granite, marble, limestone, and metals.

Deciding which material to use depends on the type of tone that you wish to set. Wood and stone tend to suit a more traditional home while metal and Formica complement a more contemporary decor. Of course, budget always enters into this decision; materials differ drastically in price; granite is a much pricier choice than metal, while limestone is more affordable than ceramic.

Functionality should also come into play when deciding what type of bar countertop to install. If you are looking for low maintenance and easy clean-up then you may decide to pay the higher price for ceramic tile; if you are in the market for durability then granite may be the material you need.

Finally, the countertop you choose should fit within and complement the existing decor in the home as well as furthering the design ideas that you have in mind. Be sure to shop around before purchasing and do so with the larger picture in mind; bring pictures of the room in which the bar will sit and paint samples if you have them. The more information you bring to the table when deciding on a bar countertop the more successfully you will ultimately be in choosing a material that works best for your needs.

10 Things To Remember When Installing Tile Flooring

Published by Medesto Remodeler under DIY

As anyone knows who has ever carried out a remodeling project in their homes, this undertaking can be very expensive. But if you can do a lot of work yourself then you can actually save yourself money. One particular project you may want to try for yourself is to install tile flooring as this could end up saving you a lot of dollars in the long run.

If you were to contact one of the many flooring installation contractors that you see advertised in your local newspaper or phone directory, you may find that they will charge you an extortionate amount of money to do the work for you. However, by following the 10 points that we provide below you should be able to install tile flooring that not only looks great but which will get your friends and family talking about every time they see it.

1. First off buy yourself a good set of knee pads which you can purchase from any good quality DIY or hardware store. Not only will your knees be thanking you but the rest of your body will as well.

2. Before you start laying the first tile spend a lot of time working on the layout of the tile flooring. You don’t want to find yourself in a position where you have just laid the last tile only to find that you have made a mistake at the beginning and so you need to tear it all back up again. Taking a little extra time on working on the layout will save you a lot of heartache as well as headaches in the future.

3. At all times follow the recommendations made by the manufacturer with regard to the installation of their tile flooring product. These people have been in the business for a long time and they know what works and what doesn’t.

4. Now you are going to start to install the tile flooring but take your time over it. A rushed job will end up becoming a botched job and could result in you having to take up and re-lay the flooring again.

5. Only lay the tile flooring when you are well rested and are able to fully concentrate on the project.

6. Buy the tools which are best for the job. Although you may think this is a waste of good money you never know you may want to use them again in the future.

7. When getting your tools and materials, ask questions of the staff in the hardware or DIY store. Remember they are actually paid to help and will probably have some knowledge on the project that you are going to be carrying out.

8. Make sure that your workspace remains clean. Not only will this ensure that your tile flooring will last longer but it will also keep you safe while you are working.

9. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. The more tiles that you lay, the better you will get at it. So when you first start to install tile flooring choose an area where it is less noticeable or where less people are likely to walk past it.

10. The final point is pay attention to the detail. By doing this you will not just have a nice looking tile flooring but a great one.

Keep these points in mind when you start to install tile flooring and you will be amazed at just how easy it is and just how great it looks once completed – and think of all that money you have saved as well.
