Fireplace Cleaning and Maintenance

Published by under Cleaning Tips

People experience pleasure having their own fireplaces in their own homes. It is considered a central appliance in a room due to the warmth and comfort it provides. But to keep it working that way, people need to do a bit of effort to keep their fireplaces working well and they should also make sure to remember fireplace cleaning and maintenance tips.

The fireplace needs regular care and clean-up to ensure a secure and cost-effective fire. Creosote, a combustible tar-like matter that builds up in the chimney and flue, should be cleaned out by a professional to do away with at least one possible fire hazard. The fireplace and its accessories must be given routine cleaning all through the wood-burning season to eradicate a buildup of ashes, soot, and creosote tars.

To maintain the efficiency of fireplaces, cleaning and maintenance should be kept regular. During yearly inspections, the chimney should be examined for damage, buildup and proximity to combustibles. The place around the chimney and the fireplace must be kept tidy and free from debris. The flue should be checked for obstructions like birds’ nests, and overhanging branches must also be cut. The fireplace, in general, must be cleaned when necessary. It must be inspected to make sure that there is sufficient protective linings and smoke ducts and that the chimney should be in good condition. The fireplace must likewise be kept clean so it would appear more pleasant to use and also to make it a better attribute for guests and visitors.

Some tips for fireplace cleaning and maintenance include the following:

· To keep the brass shiny, a toothbrush and Worcestershire sauce should be used. The brass knobs and the door or metal parts around the fireplace can be cleaned by scrubbing since this would keep the area tidy and gleaming.

· Doors should be open for venting. Avoid fire that burns longer than five hours.

· To avoid hot embers from jumping onto the carpet, the screen should be kept close. Place a non-flammable rug directly on the fireplace. This is to avoid sparks from igniting the carpet or wooden floor.

· Do not leave the fire unattended, especially when there are small children.

· Use a chimney cap to avoid animal nesting, water damage or debris. This is also to avoid obstructing the chimney.

· Clean out the firebox once a week. To help coals heat faster and to retain their heat longer, an inch of ash must be kept in the bottom to work as an insulator. Before the ash is taken out from the firebox, open the damper to avoid ashes spreading out. Do not use a vacuum cleaner in cleaning out the ash.

· Use a brick cleaner when cleaning a brick fireplace. Use lemon oil every month or two to clean exterior slate hearths.

· Clean gas logs once a month using a soft bristle brush. Avoid cleaning them right after a fire. periodically remove the excess ashes and unburned logs from the fire.

These are just some of the ways to ensure that the fireplace performs at its best. In addition, it’s always an advantage to follow the fireplace cleaning and maintenance pointers religiously.

Wealth Vase – Creating One the Traditional Feng Shui Way

Published by under Feng Shui

What is a Wealth Vase

Simply put, the wealth vase is considered to be a very potent wealth enhancer for your family. It was a luxury available only for the wealthy in traditional China and you’ll be surprised by how many homes there have a wealth vase in a secret corner of their home. Many of these have lasted for many generations (being passed down) and is considered the secret of how many of these wealthy families continue to gain wealth and opportunities.

Choosing the Wealth Vase

Most wealth vases will be of the traditional chinese types, but that does not mean you are limited to it. The majority of the older wealth vases are of chinese designs simply because it was obtained in china and thus had its cultural influences in its art. What’s more important is that you choose a strong and sturdy (non-transparent vase). The top part of the vase (also known as the neck) should be smaller than the body and base. This allows you to place layers of cloth over it and tie it firmly with colored ribbons. When looking out for one, find one that you have an affinity with and gives you the feeling that it’s classy and very sturdy. But remember, what makes the Wealth Vase so potent is not the vase itself, but the ingredients that go into it.

Dispelling Some Myths of the Wealth Vase

Though there are many recipes out there and there is no reason for an individual to cater the contents to their tastes; many rulings are not entirely necessary or just plain funny. A good example of an unnecessary content to have inside would be a picture of someone wealthy you know. If you were to ask any of the elder generation of chinese about this, their reply would be ‘we wanted more wealth, not be stalkers’ or ‘since when did we have cameras back then?’. Pictures/photos back then were not easily available and thus not used in traditional Wealth Vases.

Another myth would be choosing a vase that is made from a certain type (e.g. metal, wood, etc) depending on where you place it. Your Wealth Vase is meant to harmonize with its surroundings and sway things in your favor, regardless of the make. Additionally, wooden vases may not always withstand the test of time due to humidity or accidents.

Putting in the Contents

Before we start about the order of contents going in, there is no specific weight/amount that you have to put inside. Though it is better to try and make everything an approximate equal amount, some ingredients can be a lot more. Common favorites to pile in extra of would be: Feng Shui Wealth Coins, Fortune Flower Coins, and Semi Precious Stones.

The Bottom of the Wealth Vase

At the bottom, you should have soil from your home. This provides a bonding of sorts between the wealth vase and you/your home. Another word for this method is to ensure personalization that it works only for you, your family or future generations. Once this is done, add a layer of uncooked dry rice and dry beans. This is symbolic of abundant food and self sufficiency in your household. In ancient china, wealth was tied very closely to the amount of food you had at your disposal. Elders enjoy explaining this process as it represents your earth always growing and providing food/wealth for you.

The Middle of the Wealth Vase

The most important ingredient here would be Feng Shui Coins. Be generous in the distribution and put in as much as you can. To add extra potency, add in various forms of auspicious coins mentioned earlier (ie Feng Shui Fortune Flower Coins) and Amulets for Inauspicious Directions. This was considered as the best secret ingredient possible in the middle. The flower shaped design signifies growth, happiness and harmony always blossoming. The amulet is primarily used as a remedy against bad sectors, and its inscriptions will be used as a protective barrier for your life and wealth. This results in happiness, material wealth, and harmony all secured for you.

Near the top

After finishing up with the contents in the middle, lay around ingots and wealth bars until it creates a layer by itself. This further adds more stable wealth for you. At this point it is said that you put in some actually money inside, but the secret ingredient here is to use: currencies from a country whose currency is stronger than yours. This will vary from person to person, but think of currencies like the British Pound, US Dollar, notes from Dubai, etc. Then comes a Ru Yi Scepter for control and dominance in what you do, meaning you will never lose grip of your self earned resources. To top it off, you will need a wealth god you have an affinity to.

So, to sum up all the ingredients:
Wealth God, Semi Precious Stones, Ingots, Wealth Bars, Feng Shui Wealth Coins, Ru Yi Scepter, Soil From your Home, Rice, Dry beans

Secret Ingredients:
Fortune Flower Coins, Amulet for Inauspicious Directions, Health & Wealth Pendants, strong currency.

Finishing Up

Once everything has been filled up to the brim, put the lid on. Place a white cloth over the lid and neck of the vase so that it can be tied up with string/rope that represents the five elements (red, blue, brown, yellow and green). And there you have it. Your own wealth vase! It should be pretty heavy at this point in time, but try to lift it up and give it a good and graceful shake to help the contents settle comfortably. The final part is to find a place to hide it in such as a cupboard where it will not be bothered or opened frequently.

Home Cleaning – Ten Golden Rules To Remember

Published by under Cleaning Tips

Cleaning may not be a favourite choice of occupying your time, so follow these simple rules and you’ll clean with the minimum of effort and achieve the results you need!

1. Spills and stains are usually better off treated straight away. Blot spills up immediately with kitchen roll or absorbent paper and chances are that nothing will remain – leave it until the day after and the stain will have dried and may well have ‘set’ – discolouring the carpet or fabric concerned permanently! Also, if you do have to use water to help remove a spill, always use cold water – never hot. Hot water will set a stain almost immediately! One exception to this rule is tracked-in mud. This is best left to dry and then vacuumed or brushed away.

2. When you clean, remember that it’s a good idea to clean vertical surfaces from the top down. Why? Simply put, gravity endures that anything you remove by cleaning – dust, cobwebs and so on – will travel downwards, so don’t give yourself extra work by trying to defy it! When washing walls or windows this is particularly true – don’t fall into the trap of continually wiping up drips and runs!

3. Always dust the wipe. In other words, use the duster first then a damp cloth. Why? The answer lies in the fact that dust particles cling to wet surfaces much more readily than dry ones. Finish your dusting then progress to damp wiping – you will save yourself time and effort!

4. Try the gentlest approach first. If soilage can be removed using a dry duster, don’t use a heavy-duty scourer loaded with aggressive chemicals – it just isn’t necessary and means more work! Also, you have to sometimes make value judgements – does that tiny burnt spot on your ceramic hob really warrant an all-out assault with steel wool and harsh abrasives?

5. Allow any cleaning chemicals time to do their work. A common mistake is to take the phrase ‘spray’n'wipe’ literally. Instead, spray cleaner onto the soiled surface – and leave it there. Go and do another five-minute task then return. You will find that the soilage will in most cases be very easy to remove. Also remember that bactericidal products all need ‘dwell time’ to work properly!

6. Carry your cleaning materials around with you. This may sound obvious but how many times have you started cleaning only to find something missing? Invest in a ‘carry caddy’ – available from almost any hardware shop – and keep your cleaning products, dusters and so forth in it. The whole idea is to save you time and effort!

7. If you have a delicate fabric to clean, always try your cleaning product out on an out-of-the-way piece where possible. It may be that the object to be cleaned isn’t as colourfast as you first thought! This method is particularly useful when using a product you have never tried before. Better safe than sorry!

8. Never ever forget that, as a rule of thumb, liquids and electricity don’t mix too well. So if you want to clean your computer monitor or keyboard – spray the cleaning product onto the cloth, not the object to be cleaned. This ensures that overspray does not penetrate to the innards of the object with sometimes dire results!

9. Always read the label. This goes for the cleaning product as well as the item to be cleaned – manufacturer’s labels aren’t put there for the fun of it! If a rug says dry clean only, don’t get mad if you ruin it by scrubbing it with soap and water! Likewise, if a product says something like ‘not to be used on delicate fabrics’ it generally means just that.

10. Look after yourself. Most household cleaning products are very low risk when in use but why take a chance? Always wear protective gloves and an apron and, if using spray products, lightweight protective goggles aren’t a bad idea either. After all, cleaning may be a chore but it doesn’t need to be a danger!

By following these ten simple tips you should be able to keep your cleaning to an easily-managed minimum.

Picking a Focal Point in a Room

Some rooms naturally have a focal point, whereas other rooms might require you to add something to create that focal point. But before you add anything to the room, be sure to take the time to look closely at that room to see what it already has to offer. For instance, you might already have something like a fireplace that is a natural focal point that just needs to be played up when decorating.

A large piece you already have in the room might make a great focal point, such as a wood bookcase, an entertainment center, wooden dressers, or even a couch. You may only have to rearrange some furniture to create a focal point if you already have something in the room you can use. Or you might have to start from scratch in choosing the proper focal point for a room.

The Fireplace as a Focal Point
A fireplace provides a great natural focal point for any room. If you have a fireplace in the room, then there are plenty of ways you can draw attention to it.

For an instant focal point, arrange the furniture around the fireplace. But there are also other things you can do. You might draw attention to that area by painting the wall the fireplace is on a different color than the rest of the room. You could also change the style of the fireplace or add a new mantle to it in order to draw more attention there. Then top the mantle with eye-catching décor items, or hang a large piece of art over it.

The Couch as a Focal Point
If you have a favorite couch that you just love, with a little rearranging you can make it the focal point of the room. Just be sure the couch is in great condition. If it’s necessary, you might want to add a slipcover to it.

You can add colorful or patterned pillows or throws to the couch to draw attention there. Arrange the rest of the furniture in the room so that it is facing the couch. A large couch can be placed in the middle of the longest wall in the room. Side tables can be added to the couch as well.

The Armoire or Entertainment Center as a Focal Point
If you want to highlight an entertainment center or armoire in a family or media room, you need to make sure you concentrate on the quality of the product. After all, you don’t want an entertainment center that’s cheap-looking to be the main focus of the room. Thus, be sure to invest in an attractive piece of furniture that’s also of decent quality.

It’s not a bad idea to also look for a furnishing with doors that will hide any electronics. For some additional style, add flower arrangements, candles, and frames to the furnishing.

You can come up with many other ways to create a focal point in a room. There will be different pieces in different rooms that you might want to show off. In a bedroom, a popular focal point is the bed, for instance. Remember to use your creativity in showing off and highlighting your focal point as best you can.

Requirements Of A Good Home Theater System

Published by under Audio & Video

The audio of a good home theatre system is very important. Though a lot of HDTVs may deliver good quality audio, not all built-in speaker systems will be satisfactory. If you have invested a great deal of money in getting a system that gives you top quality images then you may not want to compromise with the audio. You will require high-end audio to enjoy your home theater system. For this you will require a good set of speakers and a receiver.

Home theater and the standard stereo receivers are alike – the home theater receivers will support more channels. While the stereo receivers have only about two channels the home theater receivers support up to either five to seven channels.

Receivers must have enough output power. They must have the power to drive a large number of speakers. High power is required to get ample volume and noise-free sound. The HDTVs cannot deliver 10 watts on each speaker. In home theater systems it can be between 30-50 watts or maybe even more on each channel. High power will help you enjoy your home theater system better, but remember, high power is expensive.

Receivers must have lots of ports and different variety of ports as this will help connect other devices you might want to use through them. You will need two HDMI that is High Definition Multimedia Interface ports and you will have to attach other components like video and speaker connectors. You could also have an FM-tuner and satellite radio receiver fixed to it.

A speaker system consists of three speaker sets. If you cannot get extra speakers then you could use the stereo system already available at home. If you have extra speakers and your receiver has seven channels then you can have multiple speakers and connect each speaker to each channel.

To make your system one of the best and the most powerful ones you could use five speakers. You could use front-channel and surround system speakers on both the sides and one speaker at the center called the center-channel speaker. A special sixth one, an extra speaker that is called a sub-woofer may be added.

The speaker at the center, called the center-channel plays the conversation and the left and right units produce background and other sound effects. There may be a certain amount of overlapping between sources in any system otherwise it could sound unnatural.

The sub-woofer carries very low frequency sounds like the special effects in movies, gunshots, crashing buildings, jets etc.

The surround speakers are placed behind or onto the sides of the system and they produce the three hundred and sixty degree effect that all of us are used to from multiplexes and theaters. In addition to this, 3-D audio may also be added.

You must get a video-shielded system as the modern day HDTV sets do not have an electron gun and are not sensitive to magnets that are in the speaker systems.

Any set you buy has to be synchronized. Most manufacturers make sure that the speakers they offer for sale have seamless integration. Before buying a system you must ensure that it is able to produce a realistic, high-end audio experience.

Home Theater Speaker System – Who Said That Quality Counts?

Published by under Audio & Video

The right quality and type of speaker can make or break our home theater system as 50% of its impact is sound. If we want the perfect home theater system, it has to go hand-in-hand with an ultimate home listening experience that surpasses all others. The speaker is an important choice for those who are creating the ultimate in entertainment in their home. If the installation of the home theater system is to be installed in the home, some time may need to be carefully considered before purchasing a speaker system that will work fully, at least to the level that you need it to. There are several name brands on the market. Is one of these speaker brands better than another one? It is always about preferences and what is affordable to the budget. That is because for each person, there will be a different need, a different product and a different price range. Luckily, there are plenty of speaker options to select from on the home theater level.

A theater speaker should be chosen to fit the exact needs of the consumer. For example, it is important to select a speaker system that will work well for the specific home’s size needs. The larger that room regardless where it is, the more the speaker sound needs to fill it – with several speakers if needed. If the speaker does not provide a clear enough range of sound, the theater system is nothing more than just noise and no impact. Also, depending in the area of the home that the speaker and home theater will work, there are specifics to consider. The basement area of a home that is turned into a home theater may be ideal for some. But, the speakers should provide for enough coverage without sounding hollow, as some rooms in addition to the basement have the ability to do.

An excellent manufacturer of surround sound, the SRS Labs has developed patented surround sound technology for the home entertainment market, along with others. Their technology is found in over 600 million hardware and software products from leading brand names. So, when considering what speakers will be needed, make sure they are a high quality brand and decent sound to carry throughout the room – this is what makes the “theater sound” that we love. Consider the home theater’s size as the first consideration for the system’s speakers. Some speakers are simply cheap, with a tinny sound. Get good advice from professionals and talk to people who know about speakers. It can also be quite important to insure that the speaker is within our specific budget range too, as they can become rather pricey.

Swimming Pool Pumps and Filter Systems

Published by under Pools & Spas

No matter your set up, every swimming pool you own (with the exception of a kiddie wading pool of course) will require a pump and filter system. You need to be able to make the right choice in these areas because you do not want to be under serviced or buy something that is way too big for your operation.

A pump for the swimming pool has one chief responsibility: circulate the water. The pump circulates the pool water through a heating and filtration unit in an efficient manner at a low-energy cost to you. In order to have a cheap running pump you need to choose one that is right for the size of your pool. That is the only way to achieve low cost for the pump.

Many feel that pool maintenance is an easy job but that is not the case. There is a lot more involved then skimming the top of the water of leaves and other debris. More involved then just assembling a couple parts to a pump – there needs to be a correct flow to the water or else the pump is useless. And you want an optimized running pump. Prior to purchasing a pump you should keep in mind that the pump has to be able to work with your size of pool – If you follow that one bit of advice you cannot fail.

Even really efficient pumps can use a ton of energy – nearly on the same scale as a home air conditioning unit. The only way to avoid over extending your electric bill is by purchasing a pump that is best suited for your size of pool. First thing you need to do is make sure that the capacity of the pump matches your pool volume. If you need to conserve energy you can place most pumps on a timer so you can better regulate the power usage for optimum times of day.

Not many pump brands come close to the performance of Hayward Pool Supply. They have been in the swimming pool pump business for 80 years and are still growing and going strong. They also make filtration systems as well which only need minor maintenance, such as cleaning the filter every month.

Intex Pool Supplies is a specialist in recreation pools and has been for over 40 years. If it has to do with pools and fun then Intex makes it and makes it very well too. They make great inflatable products and pools, swimming gear, toys and more.

I cannot stress this enough: size matters. You do not want a filtration system or a pool water pump that is not rated for the volume of water that your pool has. If you have a unit that is too small it will not be effective and cannot do what it is meant to do. You will wind up burning the unit out which will do you no good at all or, at the very least, it will do a very inadequate job and will work harder and waste more money in electric. Same thing goes with buying a pump and filter that is far greater than you need – it is a waste of money and power and will not guarantee a cleaner pool.

Jacuzzi Tubs

Published by under Pools & Spas

When people refer to a hot tub or a spa, they often think of the word Jacuzzi. The terms are often used interchangeably but Jacuzzi is actually a brand name. So the term should be Jacuzzi tubs or Jacuzzi hot tubs.

When you start shopping for Jacuzzi tubs, there are a number of issues to bear in mind. Firstly, where are you going to put it? I know that sounds obvious, but many people dont consider the consequences of putting a hot tub inside the house, upstairs or even in the basement. They need a room with plenty of air circulation to keep drywall from mildew or rot. It also needs plenty of weight support to hold all of the water. Putting one on the second floor is not a good idea, unless it is a small bathtub Jacuzzi. A basement hot tub is not a good idea either since the walls can hinder ventilation and cause added damp problems.

The ideal place for Jacuzzi tubs is in the garden or patio where you have substantial foundations to rely on. To enable all year round use you can construct a gazebo or small room around it. Windows can be used for ventilation, or to cool off on hot summer nights.

What size do you need? Do you like parties and entertaining? If so you will want to consider 6-8 person tubs. If it is just for you and your partner then a two seater will be perfect. Jacuzzi tubs come in a variety of sizes and shapes such as round, square, oval, kidney shaped. Some manufacturers supply a custom design and can be made into a shape to fit a unique room.

What often determines the price is how many jets there are are inside the tub and how many settings these jets have. Settings on simple models can just be set to either high or low, but more advanced models will offer multiple choices for water speed and angle as well as options such as waterfall and lights. Jacuzzi tubs require care to keep that at their best, and that includes taking care of the water quality. Water levels must be checked regularly and treated for bacteria using a variety of chemicals available to treat the water.

There are a wide variety of options to go with your hot tub. Steps up to the edge, bars and stools, TV’s, music centers, floating bars, drink holders, pillows and toys for the kids are just a few of the fun things available. One pretty useful accessory (if the tub didn’t come with one), is a cover. Hot tub covers should always be on the Jacuzzi when not in use, keeping excess dirt and dust out of the water and jets, keep wandering children out of the water (many are lockable) and reducing heat loss to keep your bills as low as possible. So get one that has some good insulation on it.

Don’t forget that apart from the initial purchase expense, there will be monthly expenses for maintaining Jacuzzi tubs. Those expenses will be the electricity to keep the water at the right temperature, chemicals to keep the ph levels safe and water to keep it at the right level. Get all these things right and you will never regret buying a Jacuzzi tub, so seek professional help when selecting a hot tub for your home – you can often try them out at the dealers shop too.

So, there you have it. Now that you’ve been given a hint at ways to improve your well-being, the next step is up to you. Take this information and make use of it. It’s easier to do nothing, but in the end you will thank yourself for having taken action on this.

Make it easier selecting your first hot tub. Learn the essentials and enjoy a stress-free purchase by visiting the Jacuzzi Tubs website.

Three Tips for How to Maintain a Salt Water Pool

Published by under Pools & Spas

If you’ve recently put in a salt water pool, then you should know by now how important it is to learn how to maintain a salt water pool. The better you know how to maintain a salt water pool, the more easily you can keep the water safe and healthy. Remember, after all, that poorly maintained salt water pools can make swimmers very ill. Here are the three best tips for learning how to maintain a salt water pool:

Tip #1: Learn how to check water levels.

Many people things that chemical testing isn’t a part of learning how to maintain a salt water pool. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Salt water pools are usually marketed as a safer option to chlorine pools. However, salt water pools are NOT chemical free. They still have to be tested for pH levels, alkalinity and calcium regularly. When learning how to maintain a salt water pool, you should also learn how to understand your salt water control box. That way, you’ll also be able to easily maintain the chlorination levels of your pool, as well as know when to add salt to the water.

Tip #2: Be careful to maintain the water when you have a large number of swimmers.

If you’ve recently installed your pool, having swimming parities often may seem like a good idea. While it is definitely good to make use of your pool, it is important to understand how to maintain healthy water when you have more swimmers than usual. Prepare the water before the swimmers arrive with higher levels of chemicals, and throughout the party, test the water if you see it is getting cloudy. You should also learn how to maintain a salt water pool after the swimmers leave. You may have to shock the pool with an emergency supply of chlorine or add chemicals to restore the pH level. This is true even if your swimmers aren’t dirty. We are all naturally dirty from the grease in our skin, and party guests have a tendency to spill drinks and food in the pool as well.

Tip #3: Notice any cosmetic problems, as these could be signs of other pool care problems.

When you first learn how to maintain a salt water pool, you may not actually think about the general wear and tear you’ll see on your pool cosmetically. However, over time, your pool can become corroded or you may see grayish and dull deposits on the tiles. This indicates a number of problems, mainly with the salt itself and the other minerals in the water. You can learn how to maintain a salt water pool in this situation quite easily. First, remove anything beginning to show signs of corrosion and rust and replace or clean. Before putting back in the water, however, use a sealant to prevent future problems. Also, you can use a tile cleaner to remove the gray deposits. This often indicates a calcium problem. Remember, how to maintain a salt water pool is not something you can learn in a day. Take time to learn what is normal in your pool and what is not.
