Deck Building and Ponds – Helping Nature Meet Our Needs

Published by under Patios & Decks

The great outdoors can rejuvenate our body and our spirits. There is nothing better after a long hard day at work in the proverbial concrete jungle than rejuvenate your spirit from your deck. Just imagine being able to chill out on your deck, watching the wildlife than surrounds your pond. A deck overlooking a pond will also enhance the property value of your home. There are countless options available for deck building and ponds.

Prior to building anything, be sure to check if you need a permit to build. You can inquire from the local planning board and find out what permits may be necessary. The laws can vary vastly from one city to then next one. If you are in violation of any laws, the fines can be very expensive. Some places may even demand that the pond or deck be destroyed if they were built without the required permission.

Next, determine your budget. While it may be true that you would love to be the envy of the entire neighborhood, make sure that your plans stay within your designated budget. In deck building and ponds, bigger is not always better. If you happen to go over your budget while deck building, your pond could be scaled down to a smaller size. You could opt to save the expense and hassle of digging a large hole in the yard and simply let a fiberglass pond rest above the ground. Don’t settle for the first handy man you come across. Shop around. Know what your are getting. Ask for references and pictures of completed projects. Are the jobs completed within a reasonable amount of time? There is nothing worse than having everything torn up and started, with no end in site. Make sure you have reasonable expectations.

Next you will want to make plans determining where and what size the deck building and ponds will be. Study a lot of material about deck building and ponds. Search for Do It Yourself and home improvement web sites. Ask a lot of questions. Do you see any pictures of decks with pond combinations that you admire? When you see one in your neighborhood that you like, perhaps you can obtain the name of who built it from the homeowner. There are so many designs and different materials that you can choose from. Take the time to look at many varieties of deck building and ponds prior to making any kind of design decision.

You may want to consider hiring a licensed contractor. You would choose a contractor for your deck building and ponds installation just as you would choose one for any other job. You will ask family members, friends and associates for recommendations. Check references. Inquire about the warranty. Be sure to check if there are any complaints with the Better Business Bureau. Find out if your state of residence requires that all contractors be licensed. If that is a requirement find out if the hold a current license. Are they bonded and insured?

If you have the inclination, you could do the deck building and ponds installation yourself. This can be very hard work but also extremely gratifying. Most importantly when doing your deck building and ponds installation enjoy the process and you will love the outcome.

Deck and Patio Lighting Thoughts

Published by under Home Lighting

One of the primary motivators for the homeowner in considering a patio or deck area as an add-on to their home is its entertainment value. Cruise the neighborhood during the day and you will more than likely see only a few people using the patio or deck. However, as evening approaches the story changes. When parent(s) come home from work or when it’s the right time to plan a party for friends and relatives, the patio or deck is frequently used as the center of festivities that often last well into the night.

During the planning stages, it’s important to include a lighting plan to make sure that the patio and deck area are not only well-lighted but that the lighting design creates a magical effect for its visitors.

Starting with the most elegant (and usually the most expensive) deck and patio lighting we can take a look at lights that are built-in to the foundation elements of the patio or deck. These lights provide a soft uplight glow that can mark a pathway or just provide a non-functional source of beauty. The lights are generally installed by contractors during the patio and deck construction and are generally not a project that the average DIY should consider tackling. I’ve seen this type of lighting done in a variety of colors and have even seen systems that automatically change the colors during the course of the evening, providing a mood-altering effect.

Dimmers are also a worthwhile investment for ground level lighting, allowing the host to increase or decrease the intensity of the lighting depending on the mood desired. Ground lighting is very safe since the lights themselves are never in contact with the visitors. Contractors will make sure that the process for changing the bulbs is simple and straightforward.

Speaking of dimmers, it’s generally a good idea to keep your entire deck and patio lighting system under dimmer control. Bright moonlight can allow you to turn the lighting down a bit while dark moonless nights can prompt you to boost the light up a bit.

Ground level lighting can also be used to frame the patio or deck area particularly if you’ve planted shrubbery or other low plantings around the area.

Down lighting is another type of deck and patio lighting. As the name implies, this is lighting from above and can be used to simulate moonlight. Besides being a natural lighting source, down lighting also enhances the security of the area because a lighted deck or patio usually leaves the impression the there’s someone at home.

A creative way to use this as a security feature is to have your doorbell circuit tied into a switch that at least temporarily turns the down lights on.

Most down lighting is accomplished by the use of either or both floodlights and spotlights. The floodlight will provide more ambient lighting by illuminating the entire deck or patio area while spotlights can be used as task lighting to highlight such areas as stairways and entryways. Spotlights can also be used to accent special features such as fountains, plantings or cooking and eating areas.

Many deck and patio lighting is installed at the waist level to keep any glare away from the face and to provide an elegant touch. Some lighting can also be installed at the top of posts that are at the top of stairways or other areas that separate one part of the deck or patio from another.

Some homeowners use strip or rope lights to highlight the porch or deck railing or other areas that need special attention such as stair risers or seating areas. If you live in an area where you can use a deck or patio during the winter holiday season, give some thought to decorating the area with lighting that can be used year-round.

Have fun with your lighting plan for your deck or patio. Most of the lighting is relatively inexpensive and can be removed or modified relatively easily. You may want to divide your plan into lights, which need to be permanently installed, and lights that are movable and optional.

Please don’t get carried away with deck and patio lighting plans. This type of lighting is best understated although some decorative lighting such as hurricane lamps or tiki torches (used in moderation) are OK.

Bugs are often a problem at night and several manufactures offer lights that discourage or repel flying pests. Sometimes a bright light, strategically placed in a tree a bit away from the patio or deck will help keep these insects occupied elsewhere rather than with your guests.

Above all, keep in mind that you want to create a magic environment that will encourage visitors to congregate and socialize late into the evening.

How to Choose a Deck Lighting System

Published by under Home Lighting

On a wonderful spring, summer or autumn evening when the weather is ideal and you and your family and guests are having a terrific time, it would be a shame to have to leave your deck just because the sun is going down. You can make such an evening last as long as you like by considering various alternative deck lighting solutions.

A low-voltage deck lighting system is ideal. All you need to install deck lights yourself is a weatherproof 120-volt outlet, some basic hand tools and a few hours of spare time. Best of all, low-voltage deck light systems don’t require you to take the precautions necessary with household 120-volt systems because they are not powerful enough to give you a serious shock.

Take the time to plan your deck lighting system. For safety and appearance sake, consider installing deck lights at steps and handrails. In general it’s a good idea to install lights so that they cast maximum illumination onto the stair treads. Railing lights should help you find the railing in the dark but not interfere with using it.

When planning lighting to go around seating areas keep the deck light fixtures relatively low. Avoid installing lights on top of railings or posts where they might shine in people’s eyes and pose a safety hazard.

Take the time when shopping for your deck lighting system to select the appropriate components to complement your particular backyard environment. Also consider whether you want additional lighting components to accent features near your deck such as shrubs, trees or a water feature.

Low-voltage systems come in many quality levels and prices. They range from expensive architectural grade deck light fixtures with metal housings and baked on finish for long years of use to systems with plastic housings at a lower cost and shorter life span. It is possible to buy individual lights and components or purchase complete deck light kits that include all the necessary fixtures, wire and transformers.

The key part of any low-voltage deck light system is the transformer. There are three types from which to select. Manually operated transformers require the lights to be turned on and off by hand. Automatic timer transformers let you preset on and off times. Photocell-eye transformers automatically turn the deck lights on at dusk and off again at dawn.

Installation is very simple. Start by placing the transformer near an outlet that has weatherproof ground-fault-circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection to prevent shocks. Attach the transformer with screws to the outside of the house or deck. Starting at the transformer run a continuous length of wire cable that reaches every location where you will be installing a light. Cables run along the ground can be camouflaged with mulch or soil.

All that remains to be done is to wire up the deck light fixtures and mount them where you want them on your deck. You just follow the installation instructions supplied with your kit.

Finally, you are ready for that spectacular moment when the sun starts to go down. Instead of retreating into the house, simply sit back and watch the magic as your deck becomes another jewel under the night sky.

Sounds great! You better believe it.

Light Switch Plates – You Need To Replace Them When Redecorating

Published by under Home Lighting

Redecorating your space can be a long, arduous process, and it should be because if you are changing up its look, you want to make sure you do it right. So, you need to have everything in order to do a good job, and that includes all the small details, especially what kind of light switch plates you have on the walls.

If you have gone through all the trouble of painting the walls a new color, changing the trim, putting in new flooring, and buying new furniture for your space, and then just put the old light switch plates that you had before back on the walls, you are just throwing away all the hard work you just did. Why? Because, more often than not, the old ones that were on there before do not match into the new look of the space. This causes things to clash and will leave the impression that you have no idea what you are doing when it comes to decorating.

So, if you change up the look of your space, then it is imperative that you get new light switch plates to go along with it. Now, there are many, many options to choose from, hundreds of thousands in fact, which means that you can find something to match the motif that you have going in your new space without a lot of trouble. For example, maybe you created a bedroom that is very laid back, it has cool colors on the wall and trim to match, plus, even the furniture you bought is very subdued and has a delicate white color to it. Well, with this space, you do not want to go with something that stands out on your walls, and in fact, really need something that blends in. Well, that is not a problem because you can find ones made from plastic that can match the new color of your walls. Or, maybe you created a formal living room space that has a very sophisticated look to it with furnishings that are antique and walls that have a lovely tone to them. Well, a wonderful option for this type of space are ones that have that same kind of feel to them, probably something crafted out of copper that has a hand rubbed finish and a forged design with beautiful accenting.

Basically, with light switch plates there are a lot of choices out there and a great way to see them all is by turning on your computer and browsing all the online stores on the internet. You can compare prices and products without stepping foot outside your home.

When redecorating your space, it usually turns into this long and drawn out process. And for good reason, since you want to make sure you do it right and do not have all these loose ends all over the space. One of those loose ends that will need tying up is that you will need to replace the old light switch plates in your space with new ones. If you do not, then the whole look of the space could get thrown off and after all the hard work you put into changing it up, you definitely do not want that to happen.

As an owner of many home decor and design sites, Jennifer Akre shares online consumer reviews and information on switchplates, giving the online consumer a chance before they purchase to learn more about switch plates and switchplate covers. Jazz Up Your Room With Folding Screen Room Dividers

Using a room divider or folding screen can be a great way to create interest in an otherwise dull area. Contrary to what many believe, a room divider need not actually be used to divider a space. You can use a decorative divider flat against a wall or in a corner to add some punch to your décor. Of course, if you have a large space and want to give the illusion of 2 cozier areas, a room divider is perfect for just that!

These days, there are plenty of styles to chose from. Virtually any décor can be enhanced with either a folding screen type room divider with decorative panels or a divider that stands by itself.

For a contemporary or retro style, you might want to try a one panel standalone divider with acrylic panels. They come in bright modern colors with geometric designs and are just perfect for a divider between living room and dining room in your contemporary home.

For Asian style décor, folding screens are a perfect compliment! If you want one with visual appeal, you can buy screens with Japanese style scenes painted on them or go with the standard black lacquer with mother of pearl Asian women, trees and birds. If you prefer something more plain but with a bit of punch, you can try a bright red lacquer room divider. Not subtle enough for your style? Then make use of one of the many bamboo or rattan style dividers.

Even the feminine shabby chic styles can benefit from a room divider. You can buy dividers with floral designs or beautiful scenes or even buy a fabric covered divider to enhance the softness of the style. If you prefer more of a french style, then there are many folding panel screens that have an openwork metal design perfect for the french look.

Here’s some tips on how you can use a room divider to jazz up your décor:

For larger spaces a room divider can create two cozy rooms from one big space.

Add a dressing area to your bedroom by sectioning it off with a room divider.

Add a room divider screen in between a large living room and dining room combo.

Display your folding screen divider flush against a wall and it won’t take up any extra room.

If you have a large room that needs to be made more cozy, divvy it up with a folding screen divider.

A room divider that is used kitty corner can double as storage space between the screen and the wall.

For a tropical or Bahamas type look, try one of the natural wood room dividers.

The Shoji room divider is great for a Japanese style room.

Modern style room dividers come in retro prints, leathers and metals.

For the library, you can get a folding screen that looks like book shelves!

Leather room dividers add elegance and softness to a room.

A painted scenic room divider can be like a huge painting in the corner of your room.

Room dividers come in widths from 50″ to over 90″.

Need to hide the kids toys? Put a folding screen divider in the corner and just shove the toys behind it!

A unique use of a room divider is to use it as a headboard.

A room divider makes a perfect backdrop for plants.

Buying room dividers online is a great way to get a huge variety of styles.

When you choose your room divider be sure to get one that matches your overall decorating theme in style and color. The right room divider should blend into the décor, but a mismatched divider will stand out like a sore thumb. Before going out to purchase your divider, measure the area and make sure you get one that will fit properly.

Lee Dobbins writes for many decorating sites including Room Divider Decor Visit them to find out more about how you can enhance your décor with room dividers.

Color Determines The Tone Of Your Flowers Arrangements

Color is influential in every aspect of our lives. It conveys a warm or cool feeling and can draw you in or divert attention. It can create feelings of cheerfulness, sadness, love or tranquility. In flower arranging knowing how to blend colors together can make or break your design so careful thought should go into your choice of colors before you start.

Flowers come in an astounding number of hues and shades due to continual crossbreeding. This is the most true in roses. There are well over a hundred different types of roses now of every shade imaginable and counting. They have even been bred now to have two or three different shades on the petals and are fast becoming a new favorite for florists and customers alike.

If you are new to arranging or still struggle with how to put color together, take heart, there is help in the form of what’s called the color wheel. It is made up of primary colors, secondary colors and intermediate colors. The first thing one needs to understand, is that the primary colors are only three colors, red, blue and yellow. All colors are made from combining these colors but you cannot make red, blue or yellow by combining any colors.

Red is a very hot, passionate and strong color. It creates drama in an arrangement. Red can make you think of Christmas or valentines. Yellow is a happy color and evokes a feeling of anticipation like you experience when spring has arrived and the sun is shinning and things are coming back to life. Birthday arrangements or baby arrangements often have yellow as it does evoke that feeling of cheerfulness.
Blue is a cool color and creates a softer feeling like you may experience when looking at the sky in the summertime.

Combining primary colors together creates secondary colors. Red and yellow make orange, red and blue make purple and yellow and blue make green.

Orange is a dramatic color, not as hot as red but it still has impact. If you want an arrangement to have the autumn feel then you should combine colors such as browns, gold or a bit of yellow and red-orange together. It will make a bold statement.

Purple is a vibrant color but unlike red and orange it has a calming effect. When you combine purple, blues, pinks and a bit of yellow together, you get this luscious vibrant and soothing arrangement.

Green is a universal color that goes with any color of arrangement. In nature all flowers spring up from greens so it is very natural to use them in all arrangements. In fact, I like to put together three different shades and textures of greens together before putting any flowers in my arrangement. It is very effective.

You can take any of these color combinations and put them together in their lighter or darker shades depending on what mood you are trying to create. Also, you do not need to stick to just these color combinations. If you want drama, try mixing together dark red, purple, yellow and a bit of white. Contrast can make quite a bold statement.

Last but not least here is a list of colors on the color wheel starting with yellow:

Yellow orange, orange, red orange, red, red violet, violet, blue violet, blue, blue green, green, and finally yellow green. Of course you could make many more hues but for our purpose here we stick with the color wheel.

I hope this helps.

A Guide to Closet Organizers

Along with losing weight and quitting smoking, getting organized is a top New Year’s resolution. In fact, a Franklin Covey Co. survey shows that 83% of people would like to be more organized. A great first step towards organization in the home is organizing the closets. Though this task may at first seem daunting, it is manageable if you break it into smaller jobs. With some careful planning and a well-designed closet organizer, a neat closet is an attainable goal.

First of all, weed out items that are no longer needed. Dresses that went out of style years ago, orphaned shoes, pants that will fit again if you can just lose twenty pounds—do you really need to keep those? Chances are you will be able to dispose of many items in your closet. Make separate stacks—donate, sell, throw away.

Now that you have cleared out the clutter, sort the remaining items. Put shoes together, belts together, and so on.

Now that items have been sorted, you will want a home for everything. Some things will need to be hung in the closet; leave those aside for now. Others will need to be placed in boxes or baskets. Some will need to be filed in a cabinet. Make a note of that.

Make an inventory of the items to be stored in your closet. Determine the best way to accommodate your possessions. Really look at your closet and think about your needs. Do you need shelves? More space for shoes? More space for hanging garments? Tie or belt racks?

With the right closet organizer, it is actually possible to double your storage capacity. Luckily, there is a wide variety of closet organizers on the market today. They are available in virtually every style, material, and price range. Closet organizers are available in metal, wood, laminate, melamine, and wire, among other things. No matter your personal style, there is probably a closet organizer to match.

Two main types of closet organizers are available: closet organizer systems and closet organizer kits. Closet organizer systems consist of fully assembled pieces—you simply have to measure your closet and purchase the correct size. You can either buy a pre-designed system or you can mix and match among components. Various configurations are available depending on the size of the closet and your individual needs. Shoe racks, shelves, racks, drawers, and more are available. Closet organizer systems can be purchased at local home improvement stores or at specialty stores. Prices begin in the low $100’s and can go up into the $1000’s.

Designed for the do-it-yourself group, closet organizer kits are less expensive and are readily available from local home improvement stores, as well as department stores. Starting at approximately $40, kits generally include all shelving, components, and hardware needed. Assembly is required, but detailed instructions are provided. Drilling is sometimes needed, but cutting usually is not.

While we have focused on bedroom closet organizers in this article, closet organizers are available for every room of the home or office.

Closet Organizers Info provides detailed information on bedroom, kids, custom, wood and walk-in closet organizers for sale. Closet Organizers Info is affiliated with Original Content.

Feng Shui 101

Published by under Feng Shui

Feng Shui 101 is a concept I have come up with to help you learn about the basic concepts of Feng Shui. Basically, this is the barebones and completely distilled version of everything and anything you need to know about Feng Shui without any of the filler. So here we go. Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese interior design philosophy, based on the principles of the I Ching. It doesn’t actually have anything to do with what style of interior decorating you’re following. Throughout Asia, Feng Shui enthusiasts consider that your home and environment, affects how you feel, as well as the energy and luck you attract into your life. Basically put, this means that your interior design affects your life and determines if you have good luck, or bad luck. Feng Shui is a way to generate an effortless (key word: effortless) stream of positive energy into your home and life.

You’ve probably realized from personal experience that cleaning your home gives you a sense of inner peace and makes you generally feel better. And redecorating certainly does the same. What you’re missing though, are some guidelines so that when you are redecorating, your home will be better, more chi-friendly and flourishing. Feng Shui is a set of those guidelines. It is really an art and science that has evolved in the Far East over thousands of years. When you put the basic Feng Shui 101 principles to practice in your home, you’ll notice the difference. Feng Shui is based on the conviction that everything in the universe contains chi, and uses time-tested principles to balance that energy correctly.

The principles behind the philosophy of Feng Shui are actually quite intricate and complex. Most practitioners undergo numerous years of training and mentorship to learn everything. Regardless though, there are basic principles you can apply to your home. One such principle is the size of your front door. Is it congruent to the rest of the house? Is it in proportion? Your fortunes may not be so good if your front door is excessively large. Is the front door visible from the kitchen? Anyone preparing meals (which symbolize prosperity in Feng Shui) should be able to see the front door without craning their head more than 45 degrees.

The dining room is not supposed to be of a lower elevation than the living room, and the southern aspect of your home must contain the color red (symbolizes congratulations in China), which represents fame and reputation. You should avoid sharp lines in your home and furniture choices – gentle curves and lines are much better for generating a chi equilibrium. Any mirrors you have should be cleaned regularly to keep their chi-enhancing properties in effect. Any other reflective surfaces should also remain spotless. Your home should also be well ventilated, with fresh and clean air entering and circulating at all times. A pair of Fu dog statues can also bring fortune to your home, as they are symbolic guardians of the home.

Cleaning Granite Counter Tops

Published by under Cleaning Tips

Many people who remodel their homes frequently choose granite as the material of choice when they decide to put kitchen counters or other types of ledges or tabletops in. Having granite put in can be a source of added beauty to your home also, giving it the look that it needs in order to make it more valuable and appreciated. However, when it comes to cleaning granite counter tops, it takes a person who really cares about the look of their home in order to take care of granite in a counter top form. Most of the things that one can do when cleaning granite counter tops are common sense, but there are some specific ways to make it look beautiful that people rarely get to accomplish.

The first and foremost thing that you should do before your construction leader leaves is to ask him or her what the best way is to go about cleaning granite counter tops. If you are having a granite professional install your counter tops then it may go without saying that he or she will tell you how to clean them. However, it would be a good idea to discuss it with the person who installs your granite counter tops anyway. One idea that they may give you is to use a piece of fine steel wool for cleaning your granite counter tops. Even if the counter tops are not that dirty or messy the steel wool can do the preventive maintenance that it needs.

However, another tip that one should know about when cleaning granite counter tops is to use a finishing polish and sealant on the granite counter top. The sealant will ensure long life of the granite counter top by coating the top and making sure the granite is strong as ever. On the other hand, the finishing polish that you can find in any store will make the granite counter top look beautiful and clean. The sealant should be used at least once per year and the polish should be used once a week in order to keep the granite counter top looking nice.

There are plenty of other ways that you should go about cleaning your granite counter tops. However, using sealant, finishing polish, as well as fine steel wool are the three major tools one can use in order to make sure their granite counter top has a long-lasting life.

Published by under Feng Shui

Are you happy with your situation in life? Invite wealth into your life using Feng Shui money symbols. With the right knowledge of how to use it, you can attract abundance, good health, and good relationships to your life.

Health and Relationships come first, because money can’t buy good health and good relationships. Once you have avoided any negative energy (chi), then you find ways to improve Wealth and Success.

The first step is to clear all the clutter from your home and office, it is important to set your intention, otherwise the space you clean up will fill right back with the same bad energy. Second thing to do is get yourself a good compass and determine your home.

Feng Shui has money tools (wealth, fortune, success and abundance) to help us manifest anything we want and need. It needs to be positive, (focused on what you want, rather than what you don’t want). The key as always is to create the balance into your life.

This three colors purple, red and green support prosperity (a never ending flow of giving and receiving) energy in your home or office.

Place as many fogs as you feel in your living room, but not too high, as frogs lives on the ground.

Just like other indoor plants, it needs some sun light and periodically watering. It can grow as tall as seven feet. Chinese Coins

Imperial Coins, round with square hole in center, also called Feng Shui Coins or I-Ching Coins, are an excellent symbol of wealth, prosperity, and security especially when tied with red thread and also attract money to your home. They are tied in multiples of 3, 6 or 9 with red thread. Hang the coin sword on the wall in the living room, with the tip facing down and towards the entrance or windows
